Sylt is on the German-Danish border. Maren’s father and stepmother built a vacation house there in the 1960s. We can drive from Osnabrück in 5-6 hours.
The island is long and narrow. The old Paasch house in Keitum faced east on the Wattenmeer, a “sea” of tidal flats and wetlands that stretches 500 kilometres from the Netherlands to Denmark. From the dining room and patio, we could watch the tides and listen to thousands of shorebirds, ducks, and geese.
In 2018, Maren and her sisters sold. But because she and one sister could not leave Sylt behind, they immediately bought smaller adjoining places in Morsum. We spend as much time there as possible. It’s a great place for biking, walking, and beaching (which we do) and surfing (which we don’t). Instead of birds, we now have hundreds of sheep on the nearby dike.
