The Mook’s and the Yukawa’s have known each other for more than 50 years. The parents of Byron, Shigeko, and Masami were neighbors in New Jersey in the 1970s. Shigeko has made two TV documentaries about the experiences of Byron’s father on Tinian during World War II. And both Shigeko and Haruka (her daughter) have visited Osnabrück and Sylt.
All of us (13) were together for a weekend at their vacation home in Tsumagoi near Nagano. We walked, fished, made “onigiri,” ate “okonomiyaki,” and took sake-drinking lessons from Katsu (Shigeko’s husband). We promised ourselves that we would get together again soon. A high point of our entire trip.
